The Party
When Nickodemus and Mariano started the Turntables on the Hudson
(TOTH) parties in 1998 it was one of the first late night outdoor
events in NYC. With the addition of Groove Collective founding member
Nappy G on percussion, the party became an adventurous, young,
free-spirited community known for its eclectic musical blend.
In the past ten years TOTH took their beats from parking garages,
lofts & boats to residencies at renowned NY clubs and venues like The
Frying Pan, Opaline, Shelter, The Brooklyn Loft, Cielo, Element, Hiro
Ballroom, SOB's and Spiegelworld. After ten years, the TOTH parties are
now taking place Fridays at the Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City
overlooking Manhattan and the East River.
The Music
TOTHís music policy has always been maximum funk and absolute fun. One can easily hear home-born genres like hip-hop, funk, house and soul played back to back with Latin, Afrobeat and Eastern European gypsy sounds. In addition to hosting live guests in the past including Brazilian Girls, Antibalas, Tortured Soul and Los Amigos Invisibles, the crew has also fused live musicianship into their sets. The heavy percussive element has been highlighted with West African percussion ensembles, live samba batucada bands and New Orleans & Eastern Brass bands. Top-shelf DJs that joined them on deck over the past decade including
Louie Vega,DJ Spinna, Rich Medina, DJ Smash, Mr. Scruff, Rainer Truby, Peter Kruder, Quantic and Mark Rae, among dozens of others.
Turntables on the Hudson has six volumes of music that were made by members of the crew and from friends in NY and abroad. Artists such as Zeb, Nickodemus, Nappy G, Quantic, Candela Allstars, Raeo, Sabo, Jay Rogriguez and Groove Collective are frequent contributors to the TOTH sound.
The 10th Anniversary
2008 marks the 10th anniversary of funky-fresh Turntables parties.
TOTH will celebrate ten years of music, dance and culture with an
all-star lineup of DJs at the Water Taxi Beach every Friday starting
May. Get ready to dance to the sounds of Colombia, Brazil, Puerto
Rico, Africa, Balkans, Arabia in a funky house, hip-hop, salsa,
swinging boogie style. Additionally, there will be many more events in
town including a club shows, showcases and other one-offs.
For fans outside the US, look out for the 10 Year TOTH Anniversary
Tour hitting the Thames (London), the Danube (Budapest), the Seine
(Paris), La Rambla (Barcelona), Bosporus (Istanbul) and more.
A limited edition CD box set is in the works including a special 10th
anniversary mix and "Hidden Treasures," hard-to-find gems from the
first three TOTH albums. Fans will be able to buy the box set
throughout the summer at the parties and order online at the soon to
be launched TOTH online store.
Other treats include a special TOTH 10th anniversary documentary, a
commemorative booklet about the history of the Turntables parties and
